Emergency Call-Out in Walton-on-Thames: no power to the Sockets

This Tuesday night at 8 PM, we got a call from a customer in Walton-on-Thames who had lost power to all her sockets.

Checking the Consumer Unit

First thing we did when we got there was take a look at the consumer unit. Straight away, we saw that the RCD had tripped and was in the off position. That meant there was a fault somewhere that needed tracking down.

Finding the Problem

To get to the bottom of it, we went around all the affected sockets and made sure everything was unplugged. We then tried resetting the RCD, but it tripped again instantly. That’s when we knew there was a bigger issue. We got our test kit out and checked the readings at the board. Since it had been a very rainy evening, our first suspicion was an outside socket.

Sure enough, when we checked outside, we found an external socket full of water. The rain had got in, causing the fault and tripping the RCD.

Getting the Power Back On

We isolated the faulty socket, dried everything out, and made the necessary repairs. Once we were happy it was safe, we reset the RCD, and boom—the power was back! All this was found and fixed within an hour.
